How might you use wikis in your classroom?
Wikis are useful tools that anyone can go on to find and edit information. They could be used for a multitude of purposes in classrooms from finding a statistic on a war to finding out who wrote a certain book. Caution should be used however, since anyone can go on a wiki and edit information, some of the information could be faulty. It's advised not to use a wiki as your only source of information when doing a research project.

It is recommended (as others have said) that students not use this as their primary source of information when researching online, because some of the information can be false. Student's can use wiki's for class projects, finding information on a topic, research historical figures, etc.

However, people that know nothing about a topic, or give false information can provide this at any time. Wikis do serve as a source for collaboration in the classroom which is great.
ReplyDeleteI think giving students something that they can update and edit on their own is a good way to keep them interested in the course. Wikis are the perfect tool for the job. You could give your students a research topic and then create a page about that topic. The page would consist of the information that they researched. The students could update and edit the page at any time. If any information was false or inaccurate everyone would be able to fix the mistake very easily.
ReplyDeleteI think wikis are cool in the classroom because say the teacher makes a website with information and then everyone else can go onto that website and change around stuff that they want or add more information kind of like the video we saw in class) also it might be a good way to have group projects because everyone can add to it.
ReplyDeleteI think that wiki's in the classroom would be especially helpful if you were doing a project collaboratively with another school, within or outside of the United States. It would be really interesting to do the same project and have people from outside of your local community update the information and change things as they see fit. Being able to add and change anything at anytime is a very nice feature and allows for a cool learning feature.
ReplyDeleteA wiki is an online page that can act as a resource and provide information on just about anything. The unique factor about them is that they can be edited and altered by anyone at any time. Although this allows the page to be constantly updated it can also make it unreliable.
ReplyDeleteI think wikis could be a very good tool for group projects or for study guides. If a teacher posted a study guide to googledocs and made it open to their classroom, for example, everyone in the class could access and add to the study guide. Also, wikis enable students to work with people from schools around the world. They make it easier for everyone to participate who is involved and for the instructor to monitor the amount of work that each person does.

The great thing about wikis is that many people can collaborate onto one page, making ita great tool for an interactive classroom.
ReplyDeleteA wiki is an online resource that can be updated by anyone. The concept of a wiki seems unreliable at first glance; if anyone can update a wiki, how do we know we can trust the information it provides? This is one reason why many teachers discourage students from using Wikipedia as a source for conducting resource. However, a wiki could be helpful in the classroom as a project of it's own. Students could be given an ongoing assignment to update the class wiki as they learn more and more about a given topic. Students could also start their own wikis and open it up to the rest of the class to add information.

ReplyDeleteI have really enjoyed the project we are currently doing with wiki. Both Lewis and I commented that we were really enjoying ourselves. Seeing our work appear on someone else's computer was really cool. I think kids in school will also find it amazing to see what they do available for others to see. They are now on the web. The system is easily designed for student and teacher to navigate and moderate work. You can see who does what and when. That is an awesome feature. I am sure this will become a norm in school very quickly.
